Chilton, Wis. – General Surgeon Peter Janu, MD continues to draw attention to his surgical skills and Calumet Medical Center (CMC) since he is the frontrunner surgeon in the state of Wisconsin to perform the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) procedure.
The recent completion of his 250th TIF procedure places Janu well ahead of his peers in the state and fifth in the nation overall. His pioneering of the technique and tutelage of fellow surgeons was recently celebrated by the CMC staff, acknowledged by EndoGastric Solutions (maker of the EsophyX device used for TIF procedures), and provided a spotlight for him on a local television show and radio interviews.
TIF treats the underlying cause of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) most commonly known as acid reflux without incisions. A device is inserted through the mouth and into the stomach to fasten tissue folds for the creation of an anti-reflux valve. The new valve recreates natural anatomy and protects against reflux resulting in significant improvement in quality of life for patients suffering from GERD.
Trained in Colorado for the procedure, Janu’s first TIF surgery took place in April of 2010. Two hundred and fifty people have now benefited from his expertise and praise his skills. Retired CMC employee, Ilo Leary had the surgery performed nine months ago. “It is the best thing that I ever did. I had heartburn for quite some time; in fact my pre-surgery test measured my acid level to be four times higher than normal. I now feel great and would not have gone to anyone else. He is the best and such a nice man as well,” said Leary.
Prospective TIF patients are evaluated for the procedure with a diagnostic endoscopy and an occasional x-ray. The TIF procedure is completed in 45 minutes and patients return home the day of or the next day with a requirement to follow a soft diet over the next few weeks.
Reflecting back over his 250 completed TIF surgery, Janu said, “The biggest surprise since we started performing the surgery is how big of an impact it has had on the quality of life for people. I hear from former patients about how well they feel. Most of my referrals come from former patients themselves since they are the greatest advocate for the procedure.”
“Previous options for GERD sufferers came at the cost with side effects of bloating and difficulty swallowing. With TIF there are no lingering side effects so the risks are minimal. National data on the TIF procedure is recently in print but the preliminary results are showing it is safer and more effective than taking long term medication,” Janu said.
With statistics showing 20% of the adult American population suffering from heartburn, one of the primary symptoms of GERD, Janu recognizes the need for more surgeons to become trained in the technique. Over the past three years, Janu has trained 15 surgeons from throughout the state at CMC including two UW-Madison physicians and the President of the Wisconsin Surgical Society.
Janu’s interview with Amy Hanten on Living with Amy will be aired on the Sept 24. His second radio broadcast interview with WHBY will be aired Oct 28. The surgeon’s upcoming free public seminars on the TIF procedure take place at 5:30pm on Sept 16 in Kohler, Oct 21 in Manitowoc, and Nov 4 in Appleton. Interest persons may register by contacting NurseDirect at 1-800-362-9900 or visit affinityhealth.org/refluxseminar. Dr. Janu may also be seen speaking at Night for Women on Sept 30.
