Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that utilizes radiation to treating cancer. Radiation therapy and brachytherapy treatments use precisely targeted and regulated doses of high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, is delivered using high-energy x-rays delivered from a machine called a linear accelerator. Brachytherapy is delivered using very small radioactive sources implanted internally to precisely deliver radiation within the cancer. The radiation causes some cancer cells to die immediately after treatment, but most die because the radiation damages the cells so they can no longer divide and the cancer cannot continue to grow.

The Radiation Oncology services at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center offer some of the most sophisticated and diverse radiotherapy delivery equipment and technology on the market today. We employ state-of-the-art linear accelerators equipped with integrated digital imaging (image guidance) for better targeting of tumors and with more precision. We provide a wide variety of radiotherapy delivery methods and options greatly improving our ability to safely and accurately customize the radiation treatment to the patient.

You can’t plan for cancer, but you can plan on comprehensive and compassionate care at St. Elizabeth Cancer Center. We are in this fight with you, striving to provide you with the highest level of health and wellness possible. We intend to make your experience one that is healing as rooted in our belief that every person is a treasure, every life a scared gift, every human being a unity of body, mind and spirit.
