Juvenile Diabetes

We can help children manage their diabetes.

Juvenile diabetes is type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes. Patients with juvenile diabetes rely on meal-planning, glucose (blood sugar) monitoring and insulin to control the illness.

The diabetes educators at the Affinity Diabetes, Nutrition and Endocrine Center work with pediatric endocrinologists at the UW Pediatric Specialty Clinic at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton to treat children with juvenile diabetes.

Education

To help patients with juvenile diabetes learn how to control the illness, the Affinity Diabetes, Nutrition and Endocrine Center offers an education program accredited by the American Diabetes Association.

Self-Management

Successful treatment of juvenile diabetes requires the patient’s complete cooperation. When children learn they have juvenile diabetes, they may feel overwhelmed and confused. We offer patience and support to children and adults learning to self-manage the illness.

Other individual and group diabetes training topics include: blood glucose (sugar) monitoring and treatment benefits of exercise guidelines for healthy eating and dining out meal plan and medication adjustments during illness how to prevent or delay complications.
