Caring for precious memories

Affinity Health System is committed to serving the growing number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in Northeast Wisconsin. Our team of neurologists, neuropsychologists, nurses and clinical social workers are specially trained in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.

What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer’s disease affects the cells of the brain, causing memory loss and other mental impairments. Eventually, the disease results in total dependence on others for care. It is irreversible and there is no cure at this time. Of the four million Americans with Alzheimer’s, 100,000 live in Wisconsin.

Ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s:

  1. recent memory loss affecting job skills
  2. difficulty performing familiar tasks
  3. problems with language
  4. disorientation of time and place
  5. poor or decreased judgment
  6. problems with abstract thinking
  7. misplacing things
  8. changes in mood or behavior
  9. changes in personality
  10. loss of initiative

Memory Loss

Everyone has memory lapses from time to time. You misplace your car keys, or forget a co-worker’s name. While such memory lapses are frustrating, they usually do not interfere with our daily activities. When memory loss becomes serious, family members or co-workers are usually the first to notice something is wrong.

As memory loss becomes more severe, changes may include:

  • personality changes, depressed mood or inappropriate behavior
  • confusion, irritability and restlessness
  • agitation and paranoia
  • poor judgment
  • decreased concentration
  • speech problems or disorientation

If memory loss interferes with the ability to carry out daily activities, medical evaluation is necessary. Early detection is valuable in treating Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Plus, an evaluation will help determine any emotional issues, so we can recommend the right support services.

Early Detection, Research and Prevention

Current research emphasizes the importance of early detection and shows several promising paths for slowing or preventing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Affinity Health System offers individualized assessments and counseling for risk management.
