How does Robotic Surgery Work?

High technology enhances the surgeon’s skilled hands

Surgeons at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Mercy Medical Center use an innovative laparoscopic surgical robot called the da Vinci robotic surgical system. This amazing tool integrates the latest advancements in robotics and computer-enhanced technology with a surgeon’s skills, using 3D images.

Small incisions are used to insert small instruments and a high-definition 3D camera into the body. Seated at the console, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the patient’s inner body at the surgical site. The robot imitates the movement of a surgeon in real-time, maneuvering through surgery at the surgeon’s command.

The surgical robot cannot be programmed to perform surgery. Rather, it is controlled by the surgeon throughout the entire procedure, offering greater accuracy, flexibility and comfort.

Talk with your surgeon to decide if robotic surgery is right for you.
