What is urology?

Urology is a branch of medicine dedicated to treating disorders of the urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, urethra) and the male reproductive system.  Urologists are physicians with specialized training in diagnosis, treatment and surgery involving these body functions.

Preventing urinary problems

Many problems of the urinary tract are caused by unavoidable factors such as aging and muscle weakness.  But some issues can be prevented or delayed by practicing good urinary tract health.  Follow these tips to keep your organs healthy.

  • Drink water throughout the day – not too much at one time yet enough to keep from becoming dehydrated.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine.
  • Add cranberry, orange or grapefruit juice to your diet.  This helps keep your urine acidic and can prevent urinary tract infections.
  • Do pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises to keep your pelvic muscles strong.
  • Urinate when you feel the urge.  Holding it in too long can cause stress on your bladder.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Don’t smoke.
