Renal Artery Stenosis (RAS)

Kidney function is dependent on blood flow, just like the heart, brain and other vital organs.  Blood flow here also helps regulate blood pressure.  If there is arterial disease in the blood vessels leading to the kidneys, blood pressure can increase and kidney function can decline.

Symptoms of renal artery stenosis

  • No symptoms are usually noted by the individual
  • Your health care provider may notice difficulty controlling your blood pressure or abnormal kidney function tests.

Associated risk

  • Kidney damage or kidney failure
  • Severe high blood pressure
  • Heart failure or angina (chest pain)
