If I have low back pain, do I need back surgery?

Surgery is not always the answer.

Consider the results of a study of 169 lumbar stenosis patients. Each person participating in the study was a candidate for lumbar surgery. Half of the people chose to delay surgery and participate in a specialized physical therapy program. The other half had lumbar stenosis surgery.

After two years, researchers compared the outcomes of each group.

According to the compiled results, patients who chose the physical therapy option achieved the same level of pain relief and restored function as the group who elected to have surgery. These results were published in the Harvard Health Blog.
