Mother Frances Streitel - Student Version

Nun starts the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother

SrStreitl.jpgMother Frances Streitel was the first nun to start a group called the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.  This group of nuns started St. Mary's Hospital in Oshkosh in 1891.  St. Mary's Hospital later became Mercy Medical Center.

She was born on November 24, 1844, in Mellrichstadt, Bavaria. Her name was Amalia Streitel.  She liked to study religion.  When she was 17 years old, she became a nun.  Then she became a teacher.  She was one of the first nuns in a new group called the Sisters of the Catholic Teaching Society.  Years later, the group got a new name: Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.
