Call It Quits Tobacco Cessation Program
Freeing yourself from tobacco can be a challenge. Many people stop on their own, but most require support. The Call it Quits tobacco cessation program offers a telephone-based counseling service or classroom support for people who are ready to become tobacco-free.
The Call It Quits classroom program will help you assess your tobacco habit, identify triggers, and develop a personalized plan. You will be given many tools to assist with the quit process. Benefits of the classes include support from other tobacco users, additional preparation and support at the time of your quit date, and one year follow-up after you are tobacco-free to prevent relapse. This program is for all forms of tobacco use including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and chew tobacco. For class dates and times, visit our online class schedule.
If you’re addicted to tobacco and want to quit, support is essential. Affinity Health System’s Call It Quits tobacco cessation program offers phone counseling to people in Northeast Wisconsin who are ready to quit smoking and stop using tobacco. This program is FREE and open to anyone in the Fox Cities and Oshkosh who wants to quit smoking or using tobacco.
What happens when I call?
A Call It Quits counselor will ask you a series of questions and help you decide your next steps. The counselor will:
- assess your smoking or tobacco habit
- discuss your readiness to quit
- help you develop a personalized plan to quit
- send you a free educational packet to assist you in the process
- provide you with support.
Why telephone counseling?
- Privacy and confidentiality: Only you and the counselor will know you are trying to stop.
- Convenience: You can call from your home, work, car, or any other place.
Periodically, Affinity offers in-person classes at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton and Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh for people who want to quit smoking or using tobacco. Call Affinity NurseDirect at 1-800-362-9900 for class schedules. Or click here to register online.
Tools for Becoming Tobacco-Free
When used in conjunction with trained counseling, quitting tools such as medication and nicotine replacement therapy can help your chances of success. Call It Quits counselors can help you determine which of these products is right for you.
Chantix® and Zyban® are two medications your doctor can prescribe to help free you from tobacco. (If you do not have a primary care doctor, Call It Quits counselors can help you find one.) Both drugs reduce nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms and are proven to be effective quitting aids when used in combination with one-on-one coaching. Studies show Chantix has a 44 percent success rate, and Zyban has a 30 percent success rate. Used as one component of your overall tobacco cessation strategy, these medications can help free you from the grip of tobacco.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Nicotine replacement therapy can help gradually wean you off tobacco. Nicotine replacement products come in several forms, including the patch, gum or lozenges. They work by replacing the nicotine you would be getting from using tobacco. Nicotine replacement therapy releases controlled amounts of nicotine safely and gradually to help reduce cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms.
