OSHKOSH, Wis.- Bill Calhoun, president of Mercy Medical Center, has been named the 2011 winner of the Best of the Best Administrative Award from the Partners of the Wisconsin Hospital Association.
The award, which was presented at the Partners State Convention last month in Eau Claire, honors on-site administrators and executives of Wisconsin hospitals and medical centers who demonstrate a cooperative, supportive, enthusiastic and well-defined relationship with their volunteer organizations.
Calhoun has been in his current position as president of Mercy Medical Center for four years and has 20 years of health care administration experience. He is a Wisconsin native, earning his bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy at UW-Madison and his master’s degree in business administration from UW-Milwaukee.
"Bill goes above and beyond when it comes to supporting Mercy’s volunteers," said Amy Brownson, manager of volunteer services at Mercy Medical Center. "All of our volunteers strive to help patients receive the highest quality of personalized care and Bill leads by example, always putting the patients first."
At the presentation, Calhoun was acknowledged by Pat Freeders, chair of the "Best of the Best" committee, for his commitment to understanding the duties of various volunteer jobs and commending individuals in peer-to-peer recognition and awards such as the assisting clinical excellence award, which identifies one individual who assisted a clinical department in achieving the top 10 percent in a monthly patient satisfaction survey.
In his acceptance address, Calhoun thanked his group of volunteers for their valuable contributions to Mercy Medical Center and estimated that it had a $1.5 million impact on the hospital. He said if that number was representative for volunteers of the 5,000 hospitals nationwide, more than $5 billion worth of services and donations to hospitals could be attributed to volunteers. Calhoun also thanked all of the people in attendance for th eir dedication to excellent health care in Wisconsin.
