Superficial Venous Thrombosis (Phlebitis)
Similar to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), clots can also form in the smaller veins, just under the skin. "Phlebitis" refers to inflammation that can be present with or without true clots.
Who is at risk for phlebitis?
- Similar to DVT
- Intravenous (IV) drug abuse or presence of an IV catheter
Symptoms of phlebitis
- Tenderness, pain and warmth in a localized area of skin on arms or legs
- Redness and swelling in the area of concern
- Sometimes a swelling resembling a cord will be present along the superficial vein.
Associated risk
The most concerning risk is the potential for superficial clotting progressing to deep vein thrombosis.
