Preparation for Polysomnography (Sleep Studies)

Directions on preparing to have a sleep study performed.

  1. DO NOT take naps on the day or the evening of your sleep study.  You may exercise on the day of your test, but do not perform strenuous exercise within three hours of your test.
  2. Caffeine must be strictly avoided as well as any stimulant medications on the afternoon and evening of your test unless your physician has instructed you otherwise.  This includes coffee, tea, soft drinks with caffeine and chocolate.  If you routinely consume these products daily after 2 p.m., you may eat or drink them as usual.
  3. If you are currently taking medication of any kind, ask your physician if you should discontinue them prior to your sleep study.  Please bring a list of all medications you have taken in the last two weeks.  If you need to take medication (prescription or non-prescription) while at the Sleep Lab, bring them with you.
  4. If you have any special medical needs, please contact the Sleep Lab as soon as possible at 1-800-242-5650.  We will make special arrangements to meet these needs.
  5. If you have a cold, sinus infection or nasal congestion, please call the Sleep Lab at 1-800-242-5650 for further instructions.
  6. Please bring any items necessary to aid in your comfort, such as your favorite pillow, comfortable pajamas, etc.  Appropriate sleepwear would be two-piece pajamas, sweat pants and shirts, shorts and tee shirts. (Please leave valuables at home.)
  7. You will have your own room with a bathroom and TV.  You will be able to get up during the night to use the restroom, if needed.
  8. Shower or bathe, wash and dry your hair prior to your arrival.  This is to remove naturally occurring oils that can interfere with testing.  Do not use lotions, hair spray, or conditioners on your skin or hair.
  9. If you are currently using a Nasal CPAP or BiPAP device, please bring your mask and tubing with you.  You do not need to bring the machine.
  10. Please complete your sleep questionnaire and bring it with you to the Sleep Lab.  This will become part of your permanent medical record.
  11. We are a smoke-free campus.  Under no circumstances will smoking be allowed.
  12. Cell phones, pagers and watches with alarms must be turned off while in the Sleep Lab.
  13. If you must change or cancel your appointment, contact Central Scheduling at 1-800-242-5650 as soon as possible.  A set-up charge may be billed to your account if notification is not received 24 hours prior to the day of your sleep study.
  14. Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.  Bring your insurance card or forms with you.  This will speed up the registration process.
